Colca Canyon

A herd of Alpacas
The Colca Canyon is the second deepest canyon in the world (3300m) and only 300m shy of the deepest canyon, Cotahuasi, also in Peru. To reach Colca, we drive 4hrs from Arequipa and through the national park where all four species of Andean Camelids may be observed : Llamas, Vicuñas, Alpacas and Guanacos.

Misti Volcano
Then we arrived in our hostel close to natural hot baths. There are 97 volcanoes in this province and the "local one" so to say pours out water at 95°C which is captured, treated and cooled down to about 38°C   in big outdoor pools. It is fantastic to spend an hour or two there after a long day of travelling.  The only disturbing thing is this smell of rotten eggs (Hydrogen Sulphide H2S). But I'm glad this odour does not persist at the pool where one can enjoy a Pisco Sour while bathing ... That evening we are entertained to a folkloric dance show in which we gladly participate.

Then the following morning is the great show! We are going to see the condors fly over our heads. It's an early start and we stop in a village to have a bit of fun with the Alpaca and Eagle ! Impressive animals up close.

We finally reach the "Cruz del Condor". There they are, majestic and graceful. The adult males can reach the age of 65, and have a wingspan of 3.5m. They are gliding effortlessly only 5 to 10 metres over our heads. It's a rare sight !
